Sunday Snippet: “You weren’t strong enough to save her.”

Time for my first Weekend Writing Warriors Sunday Snippet post for 2017! I’ve decided to start promoting snippets from the final Dark Sky novel, Obsidian Skysince it’s up for preorder now, is coming out February 7, and is my favourite in the series. The story is told from two character perspectives, Claire’s and Sawyers, and I’ve decided to start with Sawyer since he’s the first chapter. Way, way, long ago when I had my blog, I did some posts from Obsidian Sky as I was working on it, so MODs, hopefully I won’t copy the same dialogue, but if I do, sorry! I can’t remember it all! Creatively edited to fit the 8-10 sentence limit, here are the first paragraphs of Obsidian Sky!

The storm came out of nowhere, as they always did.

I gritted my teeth and held up the crate lid, protecting my face from the fresh torrent of hail that came on the wind. The shards of ice pummeled the battered wood, then vanished completely when the wind changed. I tossed down my makeshift shield, grabbed the spokes of the helm, and fought the wind.

“Hard to port,” I bellowed, my throat already burning from constantly shouting orders, and more yelling wasn’t helping.

Good thing it’s raining, I thought grimly.

I watched Nash sprint across the deck below, racing for the trap door to repeat my command to Gemma. We were in the air when the storm hit, and Nash refused to follow any order until Gemma was safely tucked away in the engine room, using the airship’s automated controls to alter our course instead of changing sails by dangling hundreds of feet in the air on a piece of rope.

I didn’t argue with him because I knew what it was like to be so in love with someone that you couldn’t think about anything but protecting them.

But you didn’t–– You let her go, you weren’t strong enough to defend her, you weren’t strong enough to save her.

The final struggle against the Hellions has arrived. A trapped engineer and a desperate marauder scramble to fight an enemy with unspeakable power on its side. Time is running out, and one world will be destroyed…

After sacrificing herself to save the lives of her friends and family, Claire Abernathy struggles to outwit her Hellion captors. They torment and terrify her into working on a weapon with the sole purpose of obliterating the world, friends, and love she has struggled to save. If Claire has any chance of saving those she loves, she must delve deeper into the Hellion world, and witness nightmares she could never imagine.

In Westraven, Sawyer Kendric is desperate to find the woman he loves. To do so, he must finally embrace his family’s atrocious past and heal the wounds it has caused. He will be forced to make new allies, uncover secrets that change all he knows, and find the courage to lead a ragtag crew into the darkest, deadliest battle of their lives.

Claire and Sawyer fight to save their broken world in the final installment of the epic DARK SKY trilogy.

Has anyone made new years resolutions? I have… A week late, but better late than never, right? I’m going to try setting my own deadlines for writing and see if I can meet them since I’ll likely be independently publishing for the next couple years. Which means I’m trapped in re-writing Hell for the next couple weeks, but at least I’ll have my priorities in the right place… I hope. Oh boy.

Anyway, stay warm out there, check out that sale, and be sure to stop by the other Weekend Writing Warriors blogs and websites for more great books! Cheers!

Wonderful snippet – Full of action and emotional anguish. Good luck with the New Year resolution! I’m kind of doing the same and have already set deadlines for three stories. My problem is actually committing to the deadlines. I need someone to hold me responsible. LOL

Nice tense scene, Amy. Love your characters. They’re so driven and intense yet emotional at the same time. That last line . . . POW! . . . is a fab hook!

I think every book in this series has been better than the last, so it wouldn’t surprise me if the final book is the best!

I see why they want to protect her, but this slowed communication could have some really dangerous results…

Good luck on your resolution! Stay warm. I’m currently in typical Texas winter–cold fronts moving by, dropping temps from highs in the 70s to the 30s, then going up again. Exciting! :/

Thank you, and I’ll try. I’m basically secluding myself in the house for almost every day or for as long as I can. Even Canadians hate the cold. Hooray for oncoming warm weather!

Awesome snippet! Very visual and action-packed. As far as resolutions go, I always wait until Chinese New Year, when I’ve recovered from all the holiday excesses and can reflect calmly.
