Sunday Snippet: “You just have terrible luck.”

I survived Black Friday! Woo hoo! I mean, my bank account is crying, but I got all my shopping done for every person on my list, and walked out with new books and a freaking Cthulu mug for myself. Which I can’t complain about. And yes, of course I’m going to be buying more books on Cyber Monday. Why wouldn’t I? Anyway, very exciting news! In just two weeks Smoke Sky, the second novella in the Dark Sky series, will be releasing! I know this is a very short timeline from what I usually have, but it’s all ready to go now! So what better way than to tease the first upcoming chapter a little for Weekend Writing Warriors? Here are the first few sentences for the weekly blog hop. In them, we meet main character Gemma, a thief who has a wicked talent for getting into trouble (of course). Enjoy! *Slightly edited to fit 8-10 sentence limit*

Nothing ever happens the way you expect it to. Even the most detailed plans wind up spiraling to oblivion’s bowels if you forget that one, minor, impossible-to-see detail.

Then again, this was the first job I’d actually planned to the letter. I’m more of a wing-it-as-she-runs thief. Hasn’t always worked out for me in the past, and neither had this.

Face it, Gemma, you just have terrible luck.

“I know you’re here, girl,” the marauder below me growled, silencing my internal voice. “Come out now, and I won’t be too hard on you.” His boots creaked against the wooden floorboards as he stalked through the attic, glancing at the stacks of dusty crates and wondering which I was hidden behind. “Might even have a little party if you play nice.”

To survive in a horrific world overseen by bloodthirsty monsters, young thief Gemma will do whatever she must to see another day. Even though that means working for a damaged man convinced to make her a permanent member of this thuggish family.

So when her employer tells her that he’ll release her from his clutches, Gemma is obviously skeptical. Especially since the job is easy enough– recruit the two marauders that the gang has been spying on to take her place.

But as Gemma lies to Nash and Sawyer, she commits the greatest mistake a spy can make–– she begins to see them as friends, and perhaps more. Soon, she will have to choose: Sacrifice two strangers to ensure freedom from a brutal future, or risk her life to save them…

Set two years before the events of CRIMSON SKY, this prequel novella tells the story of how Gemma met Nash and Sawyer, and what prompted her to chose their safety over her own. While best enjoyed before reading CRIMSON SKY, this bonus story can be read at any time or enjoyed as a standalone.

I’m scrambling to do as much promotion as possible for the upcoming blog tour, which still has plenty of open spots for all interested bloggers and reviewers!

There’s also a signup for the cover reveal of Obsidian Sky, the third and final book in the Dark Sky series! I’ve already seen the cover, and trust me ladies and gents, it’s freaking awesome.

In other news, I’m still working away at NaNoWriMo, and while I’m at the halfway point of my novel and will break 50K, I’m not going to finish it this month. I’m a little disappointed with myself for that since it’s the first year where I haven’t accomplished that goal, but I’m still going to work through it and complete the novel by the end of the year. You can’t win ’em all, right?

Be sure to check out the Weekend Writing Warriors blogs for other fantastic snippets. Cheers!

The best laid plans… Eww. I don’t think she wants to party with him at all.

All your shopping done? I’m jealous. I think I have maybe 80%… Congrats on your upcoming release!

I’m done! Just waiting on a couple mailed things to arrive and I gotta make a run to the liquor store, but that’s it! Thanks!

I absolutely love this line: ‘Even the most detailed plans wind up spiraling to oblivion’s bowels’.

But on a personal, non-writing level, what’s with this ‘I already finished my Christmas shopping’ garbage? You realize that’s disgusting, right?

I did most of my shopping online early this month…I’m just not a fan of the holiday crowds!! I crossed 50k on my NaNo but am not nearly done with my book, either. That’s okay! Some books need more time to marinate. lol.
Love this snippet, especially the line about oblivion’s bowels. How’s she going to get out of this jam? An intriguing opening look.
