Sunday Snippet (“The full extent of my magic was free.”) and Autumn Writing Updates

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors, the blog hop where authors post 8-10 sentences from their current, newly released, or upcoming work in progress. I’m still posting the first chapter of Storm of the Gods, the first book in my new and upcoming urban fantasy series. Things were going in a downward spiral for Derek last week as the dark-scion moved to attack, and it looks like the man has the upper hand. But he has no idea what Derek is capable of, or what he risks unleashing when he targets the person Derek loves most in the world… (snippet has been edited to fit 10 sentence limit)

***

Another ball of aether filled his hand. Liam skidded to a stop, but it was too late. The smoking sphere of torture flew out of the dark-scion’s hand and smacked into my little brother’s chest. Liam flew back and collided with the ground. He didn’t move again.

The Berserker Rage, the scorching pulse of wild magic I’d ignored all day, rose through my body. My mind screamed at it to stop, but all I could see was Liam lying there, not moving, and then the dam holding the Rage shattered open. The full extent of my magic was free.

I forgot about pain, I forgot about where I was, I forgot about why I was here.

All that mattered was freeing myself from the aether-binds, and ripping my enemies limb from godsdamn limb.

Yup. Derek is not a happy man, and he is not someone you mess with when he’s angry. More will come next week!

In other news… I know I’ve been really, really quiet about my latest writing projects. In fact, it’s been almost a year since I released a book. I know! Crazy, right? But I assure you that I am working on the first books in two new, and completely different series, one of which (Storm of the Gods) will be self-published, and another that will (hopefully) be traditionally published.

Storm  will be going to my editor by the end of this coming week *minor panic attack at the looming deadline*. It’s very near and dear to my heart and I can’t wait to share the rest of it with readers (I love it so much, I even use some of the slang in my real life… true story).

The second rewrite is a YA Fantasy I’ll be doing for NaNoWriMo. Another project I’m excited and loving, it’s a mix of Game of Thrones, Throne of Glass, and the animated Gargoyles series that soaked up all my time when I was a kid. I can’t wait to toy around with all these new ideas. Some of them are pretty gnarly and I get the feeling I’m going to be as addicted to this new magical world as I am with Storm‘s. Translation: If you think I’m causing chaos for Derek, Liam, and the rest of the gang that will be introduced in Storm of the Gods, you ain’t seen nothing yet. *evil laugh*

AND, as if I weren’t excited enough, I just got news that my urban fantasy anthology, The Shadow Omnibus, is on BookWorks October Recommended Reading List! Woo hoo!

Ghosts, vampires, pirates, and more haunt the pages of this short story collection from author Amy Braun.

In BRIGHT BUTTERFLY, Nova is an urban legend. Newly chosen to carry on the Mothman’s legacy, she believes in using her powers to protect humans rather than feeding from their fear. But the other, older urban legends are becoming desperate as newer generations of legends begin to kill them off for the sake of power. Through trial and tragedy, Nova must bring both sides together before every legend––old and new––is forgotten or destroyed.

In CALL FROM THE CRAVE, a young necromancer is forced to summon the spirit of a ruthless assassin, and fight to stop him when he gets out of control.

HOTEL HELL is the story of a young man looking for his missing fiancee and coming across a mysterious hotel that could lead to her location, or his demise.

LOST SKY is the idea that created the bestselling DARK SKY series, telling of a young engineer choosing to work with untrustworthy marauders to rescue her kidnapped sister from an airship piloted by bloodthirsty monsters from another world.

ENGINEERED DECEIT is an exclusive prequel short story to the best-selling CRIMSON SKY, wherein a young marauder captain and his two crew mates stumble upon an unhinged engineer, who is more dangerous than the monsters they were running from.

Experience adventure, tension, and danger in this diverse and fast-paced horror anthology.

Oh dear, things don’t look good and I don’t blame him for being mad (Loved the phrase ‘The smoking sphere of torture’. Congratulations on all your achievements, I only wish I could be as prolific! If I could get a book finished and submitted in a year I’d be a very happy bunny!

It sounds like you and I are in the same position, Amy. It’s been nearly a year since my last release, as well, and I’ve also got a rewrite of a previous project in mind. We aren’t completely alike though. I’m still complaining about the heat.

It’s hard, isn’t it, publishing independently? I’ll never complain about heat though!

You write the best magic fights, Amy. I’m so curious about this world and what’s really going on here.

Holy cow! Poor Liam. Or maybe it’s poor Derek as he can’t keep his magic restrained. Congrats on your projects.

Never make a man think he has nothing left to lose… that’s dangerous for everyone. I’m hoping his brother is okay, and he doesn’t get himself killed! I have less sympathy for the bad guys, though I suspect the next few minutes are going to be quite terrible for them!

Good luck on both your projects! 🙂
