Sunday Snippet: “Reds were fast…but so was I”, CURSED Box Set Release, and Huge Promo Sale!

It’s time for Weekend Writing Warriors, aka 8Sunday, where indie authors get together to showcase their newly released, upcoming, or current works in progress. I’m taking a break from last week with Amber Sky because I have another *new* release! My first ever boxed set has been released! To celebrate, I’m sharing an old snippet from Demon’s Daughter, one that I don’t think has been used or was used a looooong time ago (apologies if it’s too familiar!). In this scene from chapter one, our feisty heroine Constance has just escaped with her sister from a burning motel, only to be confronted by a monster from another dimension. Here’s what Constance thinks when she sees it (some creative editing to fit WeWriWa guidelines):

The air ripped open like a wound, shuddering and pulling apart to reveal the red, flaming misery of another world. I couldn’t tell for sure, but my guess was that I was looking into Hell. It was the only place I’d heard of that was always on fire.

Out of the tear came a skinny red monster. A Red, I called them. It was about six feet tall with a scrawny humanoid shape, but sexless with poreless, blood red flesh and vicious black claws on its hands and feet. Its thin, oily hair hung in wet strands around its head and in front of its ugly pointed ears. Its eyes were almond-shaped and pitch black, its lips peeled back in a savage snarl that revealed a row of serrated teeth. It sniffed the air through its slitted nose, then charged at me.

Reds were fast, very fast, but so was I.

As I mentioned, the Cursed box set is released and available for 0.99 until the end of today only on Kobo, Nook, iTunes, and Smashwords! I didn’t add Kindle in there because long story short, Kindle screwed me over with their policies. I’m just as surprised as you are, which is to say, not at all. But onwards! Click here, on the image below, or the links to find over 200 brand new books!

An urban fantasy series for fans of the “Supernatural” TV show, CURSED tells the story of Constance Ramirez, a hardened young woman determined to protect her adopted sister, Dro, from the bloodthirsty demons hunting her– and from Dro’s own deadly powers. As the sisters cross paths with demon slayers, psychics, and angels, they become tangled in a dangerous web that brings Constance’s past back to haunt her. Protecting her sister and her new allies will test Constance in ways she never imagined– though she may be too human to survive it.

I’m super-pumped about the boxed set’s release and the Book Blitz being hosted on over 90 blogs/websites thanks to the wonderful Giselle of Xpresso Book Tours, but I’m also going to be promoting another author this month. A Fortnight in Loom, set up by myself and The Bookish Crypt to celebrate the upcoming release of Elise Kova’s upcoming novel, The Alchemists of Loom begins tomorrow! Quick story:

Cassandra and I are fans of Kova’s work and were fortunate enough to be recipients of Advanced Reader Copies of Loom. We loved the book and decided, out of the blue, to create our own promotion for readers who have read and enjoyed the Air Awakens books, love epic and high fantasy, are fascinated by steampunk and adventure, have played or currently play Dungeons and Dragons, or are looking for a new story in a new world like nothing you’ve ever seen beforeThis is in perfect timing with the cover reveal for Kova’s upcoming novel The Crown’s Dog, which looks awesome!

Her vengeance. His vision.

Ari lost everything she once loved when the Five Guilds’ resistance fell to the Dragon King. Now, she uses her unparalleled gift for clockwork machinery in tandem with notoriously unscrupulous morals to contribute to a thriving underground organ market. There isn’t a place on Loom that is secure from the engineer turned thief, and her magical talents are sold to the highest bidder as long as the job defies their Dragon oppressors.

Cvareh would do anything to see his sister usurp the Dragon King and sit on the throne. His family’s house has endured the shame of being the lowest rung in the Dragons’ society for far too long. The Alchemist Guild, down on Loom, may just hold the key to putting his kin in power, if Cvareh can get to them before the Dragon King’s assassins.

When Ari stumbles upon a wounded Cvareh, she sees an opportunity to slaughter an enemy and make a profit off his corpse. But the Dragon sees an opportunity to navigate Loom with the best person to get him where he wants to go.

He offers her the one thing Ari can’t refuse: A wish of her greatest desire, if she brings him to the Alchemists of Loom.

And with all of that going on, I’m still working on my book for NaNoWriMo (I passed 10K! Woo!), and in a moment of shock and horror, realized I need to get everything ready for the preorders and upcoming release of the next Dark Sky novella, Smoke Sky, which will be out in about a month, and will be the last prequel story now that Ghosts, Gears, and Grimoires has been released. Wow, this is the first time I have legitimately forgotten my priorities. Is that a sign that I’m working too much? Yes? That means I’m allowed to indulge in some Halloween chocolate and American Gods (SO GOOD) later tonight to soothe my currently frazzled mind? Yes? Please say yes. It won’t cure my cold (uuuugggghhhh), but it will make me feel better!

Speaking of feeling better, be sure to check out the other Weekend Writing Warriors and leave some love on their blogs and websites, and be sure to take advantage of that 0.99 promo! I did, because who can say no to books for less than a coffee?

Great description. Not your regular kind of scary – but full on horror image. Good luck with the boxed set.

Wonderful imagery. I’d be very afraid to meet a RED. Reds are fast, but so is he– so glad he is. Sounds like he needs to be.

I’m on the same page, but she (Constance is a woman), is used to facing danger at virtually every turn. 😉
