Sunday Snippet: “Not when I knew I could kill it.”

It’s time again for Weekend Writing Warriors, aka 8Sunday, where indie authors get together to showcase their newly released, upcoming, or current works in progress. I’m continuing with Demon’s Daughter, as today is the last day of the book blitz and the 0.99 boxed set sale. Continuing from last week, Constance decides that instead of running from the demon, she ought to fight it…

As soon as I saw the world open, I threw off my backpack and started reaching for one of the slim, throwing knives in my jacket. There was no point in running from the monster. Not when I knew I could kill it.

I ducked down as it swiped its claws at me, stabbing my knife into its stomach. The monster growled but didn’t act like it was really affected by the wound. I stabbed it again and again as quickly as I could, hoping to damage it before it could get a shot in at me, or get to Dro.

Out of the corner of my eye I saw it swing at me with its other hand. I pulled back and twisted out of range, the claws skidding along the back of my jacket. I dropped to the ground and kicked its legs out from under it, but the Red tucked and rolled instead of staying down.

I was trying to push up from my crouch when it pounced on me.

An urban fantasy series for fans of the “Supernatural” TV show, CURSED tells the story of Constance Ramirez, a hardened young woman determined to protect her adopted sister, Dro, from the bloodthirsty demons hunting her– and from Dro’s own deadly powers. As the sisters cross paths with demon slayers, psychics, and angels, they become tangled in a dangerous web that brings Constance’s past back to haunt her. Protecting her sister and her new allies will test Constance in ways she never imagined– though she may be too human to survive it.

Next week it’s back to writing for NaNoWriMo, which is going great. I’m almost at 30K, but only on Chapter Seven of the novel, not quite halfway. Still so much that needs to happen! In other news, a joint-promotion called A Fortnight in Loom, set up by myself and The Bookish Crypt to celebrate the upcoming release of Elise Kova’s upcoming novel, The Alchemists of Loom has been going great! We got tons of responses for the read-a-long, and tomorrow the photo challenge for everyone begins!

Her vengeance. His vision.

Ari lost everything she once loved when the Five Guilds’ resistance fell to the Dragon King. Now, she uses her unparalleled gift for clockwork machinery in tandem with notoriously unscrupulous morals to contribute to a thriving underground organ market. There isn’t a place on Loom that is secure from the engineer turned thief, and her magical talents are sold to the highest bidder as long as the job defies their Dragon oppressors.

Cvareh would do anything to see his sister usurp the Dragon King and sit on the throne. His family’s house has endured the shame of being the lowest rung in the Dragons’ society for far too long. The Alchemist Guild, down on Loom, may just hold the key to putting his kin in power, if Cvareh can get to them before the Dragon King’s assassins.

When Ari stumbles upon a wounded Cvareh, she sees an opportunity to slaughter an enemy and make a profit off his corpse. But the Dragon sees an opportunity to navigate Loom with the best person to get him where he wants to go.

He offers her the one thing Ari can’t refuse: A wish of her greatest desire, if she brings him to the Alchemists of Loom.

Next week I’ll hopefully be able to get the final media kits and preorders ready for the upcoming release of the next Dark Sky novella, Smoke Sky, which will be out in early December, all the while chugging away for NaNoWriMo. Lots of work, so little time!

Be sure to check out the other Weekend Writing Warriors and leave some love on their blogs and websites. See you all next week!

Usually one says no point is n running because you know you’re doomed not because I knew I could kill it. I like that. Now that’s a character with no insecurities!

So far, this snippet goes to show that her ‘I knew I could kill it’ is largely based on overconfidence. She has a fight on her hands.

Sounds like her certainty that she could kill the Red might have been a little misplaced… Hopefully she can pull through, because that demon is not going down without a fight!
