Sunday Snippet: “I thought we’d stopped doing this.”

Whew, it’s been a crazy week, setting things up for next month! But I will always find time for 8Sunday, aka time for Weekend Writing Warriors, the weekly blog post where indie authors share 8-10 sentences of their newest or upcoming releases. Before I get to my snippet, I’d like to let other WeWriWa authors know that I’ve reviewed Elyzabeth M. VaLey’s latest book, if you’re interested in checking it out (which you should, the book is great!). Now, onward. I’m still going with Amber Sky, but we’re moving out of Nash’s physical and emotional torment to something a little more complex. Can you guess it involves a woman? Readers, meet Sonya (*creatively edited to fit the 8-10 sentence limit)…

“You won the fight, which means you won me.”

I winced. Sonya frowned and I quickly looked away.

“I’m sorry,” I said, “I just… The fight gave me some new bruises and I kind of lost it, and…”

I thought we’d stopped doing this.

Last year, when I turned sixteen and won my first fight of the year, Ryland offered Sonya to me as a gift. I knew who she was. She was always kind to me, but I didn’t know what she did for the crew.

She showed me that night.

It was also the first time I found out her bruises weren’t very different from mine.

Press-ganged into servitude by a ruthless band of marauders who survived the devastating Storm, Nash has grown tired of his career– the young, undefeated champion of the Stray Dog fighting pits. All he longs for is a place to live where his family is not his enemy.

When his captain gives him an assignment to embed him deeper into the crew, Nash attempts to refuse, until the life of his friend is threatened. Determined to save her, Nash embarks on the mission to subjugate and control a supplier. But the supplier has other clients, one of which could be the son of the most feared pirate captain in all of Westraven.

And if Nash plays his cards right, the key to his deeply desired freedom, if he can live with the consequences of his choice…

Set two years before the events of CRIMSON SKY, this prequel novella tells the story of how Nash and Sawyer crossed paths– and fists. While best enjoyed before reading CRIMSON SKY, this bonus story can be read at any time or enjoyed as a standalone.

An urban fantasy series for fans of the “Supernatural” TV show, CURSED tells the story of Constance Ramirez, a hardened young woman determined to protect her adopted sister, Dro, from the bloodthirsty demons hunting her– and from Dro’s own deadly powers. As the sisters cross paths with demon slayers, psychics, and angels, they become tangled in a dangerous web that brings Constance’s past back to haunt her. Protecting her sister and her new allies will test Constance in ways she never imagined– though she may be too human to survive it.

More exciting news for anyone looking forward to Halloween––as you all should be, because it’s Halloween! I’m dressing up as Cleopatra this year (anyone else dressing up by chance? Come on, you’re never too old!), which is a polar opposite to the story I’ll have released in Ghosts, Gears, and Grimoires, another short story collection coming at the end of the month from Mocha Memoirs Press.

I’m thrilled about this upcoming release for three reasons: One, it’s a new story release, and the story will be set in the Dark Sky world and told from Sawyer’s perspective. It will be a prequel and won’t connect to the novels or novellas, but I had a great time writing it and hope other readers enjoy it. Second, the cover looks awesome and I can’t wait to hold it in my hands. Third, there is a book trailer!

l’ve never been in one or had one made before, so this is super exciting! While I can’t go into too many details right now, keep your eyes peeled for two big upcoming giveaways with a copy of Ghosts, Gears, and Grimoires for a prize! More details will be coming in the next couple weeks!

And that’s the scoop! I could go into a little more detail about my current writings, but I honestly need to catch up on them. I didn’t get a lot of words in today and it’s getting close to my bedtime. Which means I need to haul ass and get some work done!

Be sure to stop by the other Weekend Writing Warriors websites and blogs to discover new books and new authors. Cheers!

Amy

Having read this in Beta, I find the motivation you’ve built into this scene very interesting. Effective, too. You manage to built in sympathy for Sonya. Good job.

This was pretty heartbreaking and establishes the true awful hopelessness of Nash’s world.

That whole being won in a fight thing makes for an awkward situation. Great job portraying both of their emotions in this scene.

He feels pretty powerless, but he has a tiny bit more power than her–just not enough to help her any. That’s rough…
