Sunday Snippet: “I still didn’t care.”

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors, the blog hop where authors post 8-10 sentences from their current, newly released, or upcoming work in progress. I’m still posting the first chapter of Storm of the Gods, the first book in my new and upcoming urban fantasy series. Last week, the scions began arguing while Derek let himself enter the Berserker Rage, his most powerful ability. Now we get an idea of what that will allow him to do, since he is not happy…

***

“They were supposed to be,” the woman shouted at the dark-scion.

Metal screeched and the dracaenae yowled. The truck rocked violently.

I still didn’t care.

“Guys!” The storm-scion shoved out his hands and fired two blasts of yellow-tinted lightning at my chest. I ducked from one of them but the other caught me in the chest and knocked me back. I felt the impact, but there was no pain. It was a setback, nothing more.

I gathered more magic, feeling the intense and welcome heat of my fire spread out from my palms and crawl up my arms.

***

Only two more days until NaNoWriMo! I’m soooo not ready! I’ve got a few more outlines to do for the settings and the characters, and need to give the plot a few tweaks, but I’m really excited about the new direction it will take. I’m really going to clamp down on Monday and get as much done as I can before I start the rewrites. Thankfully, my editor is taking more time with Storm of the Gods, which will buy me time to plan its release and focus on my NaNoWriMo novel.

Be sure to check out the other Weekend Writing Warriors blogs and websites for your fill of sci-fi, fantasy, romance, and awesome book deals! Until next time, cheers!

Sounds like this fight is not over, and the enemy is going to regret being there. Great snippet! 🙂

Derek, GO for it, man! We’ve been waiting for weeks now LOL…really effective build up of the action and tension in this scene (over the many snippets and today). Can’t wait for the ultimate explosion.

Haha I almost feel bad about letting the suspense build for sooooo loooooong, but it’s a really long chapter and I promise it flows much faster when you read the whole thing instead of snippet after snippet. 😉

Great description of the magic, as usual. I can really feel it. There must be a high price to pay for this ability if he’s so careful not to use it.

Thank you, and yes, yes there is. It’s a badass ability, but you wouldn’t envy him when it runs out. 😉

I’m not ready for NaNo either! I’m a slow writer so I never expect to make 50K but I try to use NaNo to start my next novel or to write a bunch of short stories but I didn’t time it write this year – I’m finishing up my current novel. So not sure what NaNo is going to hold for me!

I love how you dropped the word “yellow” into the description of “yellow lightening” in this snippet – that makes the visual that much easier to imagine/impactful. Small details like that really bring a story alive!

That’s a great idea! I find that NaNoWriMo is a great foothold for any kind of writer. 50K for me is usually about a third of a book, but this time around I’m focusing on a rewrite for a YA Fantasy novel I’m excited to do.

      And thank you!

Don’t you wish you had some sort of magical fire in your arms that would help you win NaNo? Maybe that should be your next story. On second thought, it’d be hard to work in the fights you love to write.

Wow, this battle is certainly getting hot! 🙂 Great snippet as always. Good luck with Nano. I’ve done it five times and completed five novels – three of which are now published, but I’m not sure if I’ll do it this year. I really need to be concentrating on revising my current WIP, so if I do it at all it’ll definitely be a ‘pants’ job! 🙂
