Even with life getting crazy (guess who just put an official downpayment on her first condo!), I still have time for Weekend Writing Warriors, the weekly blog hop where indie authors share 8-10 sentences of their current, upcoming, and newly released work, which means a new snippet from Storm of the Gods, my urban fantasy book currently in querying process (or rather, waiting for judgement from Query Shark). We’re continuing from last week with some slightly edited lines from the first chapter. Now that Derek’s stopped the transport truck to investigate what appeared to be a mysterious black clad figure hiding in the distance, he and his brother Liam begin to check the scene out, and we get a little more insight into Derek’s substantial powers…
All I could do was roll my eyes and sigh as Liam unlocked the passenger door and jumped out of the cab. I grabbed the keys from the ignition and slid out of the truck.
We slowly stalked toward the front of the truck, the roasting California sun beating down on us and searing through our Kevlar and Cut-Tex armour. My fingers twitched for a weapon, the kopis sword sheathed on my back or one of the knives strapped to my right pectoral, either rib cage, belt, and boots. I’d used elemental fire against the dracanae to keep it from ripping me in half, but still had tons of magic to draw on if I needed it.
The unused Berserker Rage tumbled around my heart, reminding me it was there even though I had no reason to use it. I could see nothing that made me want to shatter all control and become a pain-numbed Warrior of destruction.
Not yet, anyway, but I knew I was being watched. I didn’t even have to ease magic into my body and Adapt to sense the eyes on me and my brother. Years of combat had taught me never to ignore the slight tension in my stomach and the rising hair on the back of my neck.

In the post-apocalyptic steampunk-fantasy setting of DARK SKY, a young engineer who struggles to repair a failure of the past, and to ensure a safe future for those she loves by freeing it from hellish monsters bent on revenge…
Ten years ago, vampiric beasts called Hellions invaded the city of Westraven and decimated it with fangs, claws, and cannon-fire. Now, survivors live underground and sustain themselves with the scraps left behind, often under the cruel fist of self-made leaders and grounded sky-pirates. Living under such rule is Claire, a talented young engineer working only to ensure e a life for her sister, Abigail. When Abby is kidnapped by the Hellions, Claire becomes desperate and finds herself allying with marauders– hot-tempered pirates equally as dangerous as the Hellions themselves.
As Claire forges a shaky relationship with them and their cynical young captain, she unearths truths about her past she could never have imagined, and realizes that the only way to protect those she loves is by challenging the Hellions head-on, an endeavour that could see the end of the Hellions once and for all, or secure their reign once and for all…
