Sunday Snippet: “I aimed my sword and fire at it…”

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors, the blog hop where authors post 8-10 sentences from their current, newly released, or upcoming work in progress. I’m still posting the first chapter of Storm of the Gods, the first book in my new and upcoming urban fantasy series. Last time, Derek was staring at the horrific sight of an angry, serpentine dracanae. Now it’s time to throw down…

***

The dracanae slithered across the gravel and swung one of its arms down at my head. I jumped back. The limb punched through the air in front of me. I aimed my sword and fire at it—

The arm snapped up and the back of the dracanae’s hand snapped toward my chin. I twisted away and stabbed the kopis into its side. The beast shrieked and slashed its talons at me. I grabbed its arm and held it away from my body.

Fire tore out of my skin and cauterized the leathery limb. The smell of scorched chicken skin and burning fat filled my nose. Flesh bubbled and popped around my fingertips.

***

In other news… I finished NaNoWriMo!

It took foreverrrrrr, but I managed to get past 50K with just 37 words and 5 minutes to spare. Want to know the irony, though? I spent the whole month doing rewrites and now, literally today, I’m starting on the brand new, untouched chapters of my YA Fantasy. Go figure. Anyway, the story will have a lot of work once I get into editing mode, but that won’t be for another month or so. I’m hoping to have the rest of this first draft done before my staycation begins on the 18th. Should be doable since these chapters are shorter and will revolve mostly around action and combat, but there are 16 of them. Good grief.

And if that wasn’t enough, I expect my edits for Storm of the Gods back either next week or the following one, which means I’ll be getting back into intense editing mode soon. It also means that I’m getting ready for a release! I emailed the cover designers and blog tour company, so those will be booked and ready to go soon. The cover reveal will likely happen in May, and the release date right now is sitting at June 12. I’m nervous because I really want to challenge myself and give Derek and Liam and SotG the best release I can, but I’m kinda awful at formatting haha. Still, it will be fun, and I’m dying to see the print book… because there will be a map! My first ever printed map! Eeeeee!!!

Anyway, I’m getting super hyped and totally not thinking about how ludicrously expensive this will be and how much work is about to come crashing through my door. Figures.

Be sure to check out the other Weekend Writing Warriors blogs and websites for your fill of sci-fi, fantasy, romance, and awesome book deals! Until next time, cheers!

“Scorched chicken skin” — great (if gross) detail.

I’m still wondering why they had the dracanae in the first place. It’s good Derek seems able to handle it.

It’s Derek and Liam’s job to pick up wild monsters that have been getting too close to humans and posing threats to them. And yes, Derek is good at fighting basically anything haha

Oh, I actually feel a little sorry for the monster now! And I wonder what the other bad guys are doing while Derek is distracted. Congrats on Nano and good luck with all the projects. I just found out my publisher is shutting its doors, so there’s seven books I’ll have to repackage and re-release myself. Isn’t publishing fun?

You’ll have to wait and see! Thank you so much! And I’m sorry to hear about your publisher. 🙁 Are there others you can try? I was just talking to my editor about sending SotG out to big publishing companies, but I’m nervous since agents said no and if something doesn’t happen in a few months, am I going to need to delay the release? Ugh, I swear, actually publishing is harder than writing the actual book sometimes. Best of luck! Get your words out there! <3

Great detail, but I did feel a little sorry for the monster. Go figure.

Haha Well I suppose you can if you want. I mean, it was going to eat Derek’s little brother, but to each their own! 😉

Congrats on winning NaNo. And good luck on your edits. That snippet is quite graphic with good use of the senses. Now if this beast smells like grilled chicken that wouldn’t be too bad.

Great visual scene – and I reckon there are a lot worse things a monster could smell like than roasted chicken! Well done on completing NaNo, I’m another one who totally failed this year, but having ‘won’ several times previously I’m not going to beat myself up too much about it. Good luck witht he edits.
