Sunday Snippet: “… Couldn’t even get their arms up to defend themselves.”

Another week has passed, and with it, the knowledge has come that in three days, I’ll have the seventh book of my career published. Seventh. Wow. Can’t believe I got to that point. Flashback to the present, and the next 8-10 sentence snippet from Midnight Sky for Weekend Writing Warriors. Since so many of you last week wanted to know what Riley was capable of, here’s a taste of it. I skipped most of his fight (it was a long one and spoiler alert: He helped everyone on the crew), so I think his actions will speak for themselves. Slightly modified to fit the 10 sentence limit.

Blow after blow landed on the Rattails, who couldn’t even get their arms up to defend themselves. Riley stepped back and swung a wide roundhouse kick that collided with both of their jaws, knocking them to the side. One man’s head struck the wall with a loud crack. He slumped to the floor and remained motionless. Riley kicked the chest of the last Rattail, sending him careening into the tavern’s wooden beam. The Rattail stumbled forward at the same moment Riley’s foot snapped up and caught him in the chin. He grunted, then collapsed on his stomach in a heap.

He stared at the men he had attacked, making sure they wouldn’t rise again. Satisfied, he turned to Sawyer, who was slumped on the floor holding his ribs. Riley held out his hand to help him up, but Sawyer glared at him, then stood on his own with a quiet grunt.

2016-290 eBook Amy Braun, Midnight Sky

There are secrets, there are betrayals, and there are sacrifices…

The Behemoth has been destroyed, and the bloodthirsty Hellions seem to have left Westraven. But Claire Abernathy’s mind is not at ease. A terrible disease plagues her sister, appearing to have been brought on the Vesper, the leader of the Hellions beyond the tear between worlds– the Breach.

To save Abby and stop the Hellions for good, Claire must find the machine her parents built before the attacks, and fix it before the monsters return. To do so, she needs the help of her crew, and must ignore the secrets and rivalries between her captain and the man she saved.

Because the Hellions are not the only dangers following Claire. Twisted humans and old enemies surface to stop her and destroy all she loves. While she is determined to endure the trials, a single betrayal could shatter the hope of a better world, and force Claire to make a choice that will cost her dearly…

Review Opportunity: Crimson Sky & Midnight Sky by Amy Braun

I’m also going to have a month long contest running for an ebook and a paperback with swag (or two ebooks if you’re outside of North America), which will be one of six running throughout the month. Meaning, sooooo many chances to win free books, and who doesn’t love that?

A note to all commenters: One of my family is getting married next week (yay!) so while I’ll be posting another snippet from Midnight Sky, my replies will be late (boo). I like being prompt in any kind of reply, so I will send my thanks and answering any questions once I get back. In the mean time, be sure to check out the other awesome Weekend Writing Warriors websites to leave some love!

Cheers!

Amy

Riley sure could handle himself, but Sawyer didn’t seem to appreciate the help. Great snippet! Congrats on your upcoming release! Excited to have you on my blog later this week. 🙂

Amy, this is a terrific action sequence, and you also manage to squeeze in some terrific character building through body language alone. Well done!

As expected, Riley is totally badass, so naturally Sawyer is jealous. Seven books woman, holy cow! You are officially my action scene and productivity role model.

Just coming into this now, I’m wondering what the Rattails are. I really like your action/fight scenes. Nicely done. When did you publish your first book?

It’s the nickname of a pirate clan that have those gross looking rat-tails for hair. My first professionally published short story, Call From The Grave, was released July 2014. I wrote a novella that I released in August 2014 called Needfire, but my first full length novel was Path of the Horseman that I released March 2015. I try to put out a book every four months or so. Hopefully this will help when I start querying next month. 😉

Thank you, and you’re totally right. I love Sawyer, but he definitely has a macho attitude more often than not. Comes with being a pirate, I suppose. 😉

Great rivalry between Riley and Sawyer … especially since the former isn’t what he seems.
