Sunday Snippet: “But where else are you going to go?”

Another book has been released! Woo! I’m very excited to have Smoke Sky, the second prequel novella/fourth book in the Dark Sky series, out in the world! The blog tour and release are going strong, and I’m honoured to have such great posts that are helping the book sales. For this week’s 8Sunday for Weekend Writing Warriors I’m still keeping on with Smoke Sky, though these 8-10 sentences are skipping way ahead from last week. In this scene, we learn a little more about Gemma’s control hungry “father,” and what her life is like under his rule…

“Gemma, I’ve told you repeatedly. You must obey my wishes. You must respect your brothers. You are new to my family, but this doesn’t make you exempt. It doesn’t make you special. Do you understand?”

A thousand words of defiance formed in my head. True, I’d only been with Fletcher and his group for six months, my “brothers” boasting five years or more, but it wasn’t fair that I was picked on, probably because I was the only girl, and the smallest and greenest of the group. I should have left ages ago.

But where else are you going to go?

To survive in a horrific world overseen by bloodthirsty monsters, young thief Gemma will do whatever she must to see another day. Even though that means working for a damaged man convinced to make her a permanent member of this thuggish family.

So when her employer tells her that he’ll release her from his clutches, Gemma is obviously skeptical. Especially since the job is easy enough– recruit the two marauders that the gang has been spying on to take her place.

But as Gemma lies to Nash and Sawyer, she commits the greatest mistake a spy can make–– she begins to see them as friends, and perhaps more. Soon, she will have to choose: Sacrifice two strangers to ensure freedom from a brutal future, or risk her life to save them…

Set two years before the events of CRIMSON SKY, this prequel novella tells the story of how Gemma met Nash and Sawyer, and what prompted her to chose their safety over her own. While best enjoyed before reading CRIMSON SKY, this bonus story can be read at any time or enjoyed as a standalone.

I hate it that he is asking her to respect people when they don’t seem to respect her. It’s also bad that she is stuck with them. She needs another option, so frustrating.

Even though she’s frustrated with the situation, she’s enough of a realist to know her options are very limited. I’m really liking her character as its being revealed to me. Great job!

    Congratulations on latest book release.
Tough place for her to be in – and that’s true to life – full of tough places we need to deal with.

Sounds as if your character doesn’t have many good choices here. Enjoyed the snippet, glad the books are doing so well!

So life is still tough for women, even in the future. I hope she finds somewhere else to go – as I suspect she will. Good news about the release. Good luck with it.

Congratulations on the release, Amy. I know it is going to do really well!

There are always choices, not necessarily pleasant or easy, or immediately obvious. Making them tough gives us an awesome read. Nicely set up, Amy.

Being new doesn’t make you special, but shouldn’t it earn you a break? I think it should…
